Aromatherapy, in alternative medicine, is the therapeutic use of essential oils extracted from plants. Essential oils provide plants with their fragrance and their healing effects on body and mind are known since ancient times.

The ancient Egyptians used them in cosmetics and medicines. They also used them to purify the air and as preservatives in mummification. Aromatic plants were also used for medicinal purposes in ancient Greece, in Rome, in China, in India and throughout Europe, until they were replaced by synthetic drugs at the end of the 19th century. Modern aromatherapy, along with the term itself, emerged in the 1930s, from the work of the French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé on the antimicrobial effects of essential oils.
